The letters never sink all the way

The tank is a clay box with a deep violet interior. Six letters hang in the middle of it, rocking slowly, drifting sideways whenever the current picks up. If you push them far enough they slide off one edge and come back in the other, which is not how water works and nobody has ever complained.

Above them the surface wobbles on two overlapping waves, and light shafts angle down through the violet water. Bubbles rise constantly from the floor. It is a screensaver that you are allowed to poke.

More fish please

That is the whole request, and the button honours it literally. Six new fish per press, random size, random colour, random direction, no upper limit. People have run this into the hundreds just to see what happens, and what happens is the tank turns into a wall of moving colour with the letters barely visible behind it.

The phrase itself is the reason this page exists. Typing more fish please and hitting lucky was the original route in, and the query still gets searched constantly in variants like i need more fish, give me more fish and please more fish. The lucky button here does something slightly different, adding a random number of fish plus a shove of current, which is closer to the spirit of the original.

Tapping the water

Click anywhere and a stream of bubbles comes off that point. Anything swimming within about ninety pixels gets startled and speeds up, which is a small detail that makes the fish feel less like wallpaper.

The current

Stir it up and everything drifts one direction, letters included, then it decays over a few seconds. Doing it repeatedly in alternating directions makes the whole tank slosh.

Where the underwater page came from

It began as an outside build rather than an official doodle, one of a handful of interface parodies that got popular enough to be treated as canon. Searches still come in as google underwater search, google in underwater, google onderwater and google under the water, all looking for the same sinking search box.
