There is something about horse riding games that makes them feel extra special. As gamers, we all know that mounts are a very important asset in such games, but not just about traveling from point A to point B, but it gets much deeper than that.

In some games, horses are very realistic to the point where you can create a bond between your character and your horse. So, if you are someone who loves horses, choosing a video game where you can roam around the open world with your horse is the best way to elevate your experience.
There are plenty of horse-riding games, ranging from triple-A titles to lesser-known developers that still produced some incredible horse riding mechanics. If you want to experience what it is like to ride a horse, here are the best video games to do that.
Why Horse-Riding Games Matter?
As we mentioned before, horses in such games aren’t just about transport. They speed up travel, allow you to carry more loot, and in some games, they will join you in battle, giving you an advantage.
Horse riding has always been difficult to recreate in video games, and it is a nightmare for video game developers. But modern titles managed to capture the true spirit of horse riding, with incredible attention to detail.
In some games, horses give you a purpose. These games allow you to care for your equine friend, feed your horse, train it, and even breed more horses. So, they also bring more mechanics, making games much more enjoyable.
Red Dead Redemption 2
Rockstar Games, 2018, PS5 Enhanced
When it comes to horse riding games, no game gets close to Red Dead Redemption 2. This is one of the most realistic games ever produced, and the horse mechanics and graphics are out of this world.
If you’ve been living under a rock and don’t know anything about RDR2, you play as Arthur Morgan, riding across a sprawling 1899 America like the Wild West. There are many different horse breeds in the game, all coming with different characteristics.
You can also groom, breed, and bond with your horse, unlock new traits, and the visual and haptic feedback, especially on the PS5, makes for an incredible riding experience.
The only thing that’s missing from RDR2 is horse races (although there is one mission where you’ll race your horse). So, if you are a horse racing enthusiast eagerly waiting to see the Belmont Stakes payouts, it is good to know that there aren’t any hosted races in the game.
Although this game is quite old now, it is still one of the best when it comes to horse riding games.
Ghost of Tsushima
Sucker Punch Productions, 2021
Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut lets you ride as Jin Sakai, a samurai defending 13th-century Japan from Mongol invaders. Horseback riding is core, with three horse choices at the start (black, white, dappled), customizable with saddles.
You gallop across stunning landscapes, using your horse for travel or stealth. PS5’s 60fps and 3D audio make it immersive.
The open-world beauty and fluid riding mechanics shine, though bonding is lighter than RDR2. It’s ideal for fans of samurai aesthetics or exploration.
Check Amazon for used copies (~$40) or PS Plus Extra for free access. Horses can’t die, but combat-heavy sections may sideline riding.

Assassin’s Creed: Shadows
Ubisoft, 2025
Launched in February 2025, Assassin’s Creed Shadows features horse-riding as Naoe, a shinobi, and Yasuke, a samurai, in 16th-century Japan.
Horses aid exploration and combat, with customizable tack. The PS5’s raytracing and DualSense haptics make rides vivid.
The open-world scale and dual-protagonist system make riding versatile, though less horse-focused than RDR2. It’s fresh and visually stunning.
My Life: Riding Stables 3
Treva Entertainment, 2023
My Life: Riding Stables 3 is a horse-centric simulator where you manage a stud farm, care for six breeds, and compete in tournaments (jumping, slalom, steeplechase). You groom, feed, and train horses in an open world, with multiplayer mounted games like trophy races. It’s aimed at younger players but appeals to casual equestrian fans.
It’s one of few PS5 games focused on horse care and competition, with child-safe design (no in-app purchases).
Unlike other games, Riding Stables 3 focuses only on horses. So, if you want a game that will inspire the equestrian in you, this is the game to go for.
It is worth mentioning that the simplistic mechanics and “cartoony” visuals, not ideal for hardcore gamers.
Horse Tales: Emerald Valley Ranch
Maximum Games, 2022
Horse Tales: Emerald Valley Ranch lets you restore a ranch, breed horses, and explore an open world. You groom, feed, and pet horses (including foals), build stables, and compete in races. Despite glitches—some players lost progress. It’s a rare PS5 title with breeding mechanics.
Breeding and ranch-building add depth, appealing to fans craving horse management. This game will give you a different view of the horse care world.
One to Watch: Horses 2025 (Delayed to 2026)
Bigben Interactive, Expected 2026
Announced for 2025 but delayed to 2026, Horses 2025 promises a “game-changer” for equestrian fans. It focuses on horse care—grooming, feeding, bonding—and includes jumping courses, time trials, and casual rides.
The cinematic trailer wowed with near-photorealistic graphics, though gameplay may differ.
It’s built for horse lovers, unlike action-heavy titles, and leverages PS5’s power. If the gameplay is as good as the trailer, this will be the best horse-riding game ever released.
