The creators of SOR4 did an excellent job updating the graphics and adding screen borders that allow you to juggle enemies thrown into the air. It seems trivial, but it effectively kills two birds with one stone.
As a result, the fourth installment of Streets of Rage felt like a worthy successor to the series, but one that didn’t rely entirely on familiar elements.

In the case of TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, the graphics haven’t changed much since Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time, which I consider a disadvantage — they could have made pixel art optional, as they did in SOR4.
Yes, we will have to return to this 2020 hit more than once, because Tribute Games borrowed almost all of its key features. First of all, those very juggles, thanks to which dealing with enemies is now even more fun, especially in multiplayer.
However, there is a caveat here — local combos are of little value outside of a single achievement for a 250-hit series. SOR4 had a ranking system, and it was almost impossible to achieve the maximum rank without memorizing levels and skillfully building a long chain of attacks.
Combos also allowed you to quickly accumulate lives in arcade mode. In Shredder’s Revenge, a series of strikes quickly replenishes the super strike bar — and that’s it.

The Turtles also have an arcade mode, implemented in a similar way. You can set the conditions for passing the game yourself, including activating the “classic” health depletion when performing a super attack. But by default, the player starts with three lives and three continues.
If you use them all up, you go back to the very beginning. Unlike the “story mode,” which was copied from… well, you already know where. In it, your health is restored after each level, and there are endless continues.
Plus, you can go back to stages you’ve already completed to level up your character faster or search for hidden items. True, I found the latter right away and didn’t need any comebacks, and there’s no point in forcing the heroes to get stronger.
But on “hard” mode, the game often gave me a hard time, so it’s time to complain about the lack of an intermediate option instead of jumping from one extreme to another. Not that it’s a big problem — after all, it’s a good incentive to explore the game thoroughly, completing additional challenges along the way.
But what prevented the developers from adapting the bitmap for all categories of players, as the authors of Streets of Rage 4 did? Who knows, maybe someone will be satisfied with one playthrough for the time being. And “normal” in SOR4 offered exactly what you would expect from it.

In the case of TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, the first playthrough will either be an easy stroll through 16 levels or a relatively harsh test that you will almost certainly fail on both your first and second attempts.
However, the real hardcore challenge was still ahead of me. “Why not copy the DLC from Streets of Rage 4 as well?” That’s probably what the creators of Shredder’s Revenge decided, and then they brought their idea to life.
Dimension Shellshock, created according to the Streets of Rage authors’ methodology, added alternative character skins, new compositions (by the way, the soundtrack in both the game and the DLC is a pure delight), two new characters (oh dear, there were three in SOR4, albeit borrowed from the main game) characters, and a survival mode in the style of “roguelike.”
The latter consists of six dimensions, with levels generated randomly. And while in Mr. X Nightmare for Streets of Rage 4 the difficulty increased gradually, here an unprepared gamer can easily meet their maker in the early stages.
The heroes will face a large number of ordinary enemies and even bosses, as well as third-party nuisances such as low gravity and objects flying from the sky. After clearing a location, we are given two random items, which can be health-restoring pizza, perks (one of which will allow us to play as Shredder), or crystals.
