Many PS5 Disc Edition owners see the error code SU-101312-8, which says “Can’t detect the Blu-ray Disc drive.”
This problem can occur due to many reasons, like a bad update or damage to the console.
There are lots of guides to fix this, but one idea from a hardware repair person is special.
PlayStation says this error happens when the PS5 cannot find the Blu-ray Disc drive.
Why Does This Occur?
The PS5 is special. The part that reads discs (the disc drive) is linked to the main part (the motherboard) in a special way.
They work together like a pair. If one part is broken, the whole PS5 stops working. The PS5 checks the disc drive many times to make sure it is okay.
This is different from a regular computer. If you take out the disc reader on a computer, it still works. But the PS5 thinks something is wrong if it can’t find the disc drive.
There are two main reasons the PS5 might not find the disc drive: software problems or hardware problems.
Software problems could be like a broken list of information or a bad update.
Hardware problems could be a damaged wire, a broken disc drive, or someone trying to change the disc drive.
It’s annoying that the whole PS5 stops working if only the disc drive is broken.
You should still have the ability to play games you downloaded. But this is how Sony made the PS5.
Fixing Your PS5
Try fixing the problem yourself first.
If you think your PS5 is broken but it’s not damaged, try these easy steps:
- Turn off your PS5 and router. Wait a few minutes, then turn them back on.
- Check for updates: Look for any update messages on your PS5. If there is one, try to install it.
- Reset your PS5: This will erase everything on your PS5, so save your games first if you can.
If these steps don’t work, there might be a hardware problem.
- Check your PS5: If you opened your PS5 before, look inside to see if anything is broken.
- Send it to Sony: Sony can fix your PS5, but it will cost money.
- Replace parts: You can replace some parts yourself, but this is hard and expensive.
- Change your PS5: If the disc drive is broken, you can change your PS5 to a digital version. This is very difficult and risky.
There is a special way to fix error SU-101312-8:
A person called TheCod3r knows how to fix PS5s. They found a way to trick the PS5 into thinking it’s a digital version, even if it has a disc drive. This might work if your disc drive is broken.
This is a very difficult fix.
If nothing else works and your PS5 disc drive is totally broken, you can try this. But it’s not easy.
You need to change the PS5’s software to think it’s a digital version, not a disc version.
To do this, you must replace a tiny part called a flash chip. This is very hard and you need special tools.
There’s another way that’s almost as hard. You can replace the whole flash chip with one from a real digital PS5. But you need to find a broken digital PS5 first.
It’s best to watch a video to understand this better. There’s a video by someone called TheCod3r that explains everything.
