What We Know So Far About The Super Mario Brothers Movie

For the first time since jumping to 3D, the Donkey Kong movie features a redesign of its iconic character.

On November 30, Nintendo and Illumination unveiled a second Super Mario Bros. trailer showing off some of its most iconic characters from the first game. Just before the end of the broadcast, Nintendo Legend Shigeru Miyamoto made an appearance to talk about Donkey Kong’s new design.

“We’ve kept the original Donkey Kong design but given him a humorous look and made some changes to his appearance. Some of you might have noticed, but this time, we’ve taken advantage of the chance to change up his design and give him a new look.”

Trailer 2 Version:

At first glance, the new Donkey Kong looks quite similar to its original incarnation. Still, there are some differences too, most notably his eyes which are now closer together, making them appear more mischievous than before, and his more rounded brows, making him seem less severe.

If the game’s goal was to give Donkey Kong a comically-personalized design, then this new look has succeeded. We can see the large monkey slapping around Christ Pratt’s Mario, and several scenes in the video shows other Donkey Kong-related characters, such as Diddy Kong, Cranky Kong, and the beloved Funky Kong.

While the new Super Mario Brothers movie trailer has received a positive reception online for a change, keep up-to-date on the movie production and new trailers updated here on the official website.
