In a touching display of compassion, Gearbox Software opened its doors to Caleb McAlpine, a 37-year-old terminal cancer patient and devoted Borderlands fan, giving him an exclusive early look at the upcoming Borderlands 4.
A Race Against Time
Last fall, McAlpine shared his story on Reddit, revealing his stage 4 cancer diagnosis and uncertain future. With Borderlands 4’s release scheduled for 2025, he expressed concern about not surviving to experience the latest installment of his beloved series.
Swift Response from Gearbox
Randy Pitchford, Gearbox’s CEO, quickly responded to McAlpine’s post, promising action. The studio didn’t just make empty promises – they flew McAlpine and a friend first-class to their offices on November 20th for an unforgettable experience.
An Unforgettable Gaming Experience
During his visit, McAlpine:
- Toured the Gearbox studio facilities
- Met the development team behind Borderlands
- Played an early version of Borderlands 4
“It was amazing,” McAlpine shared after his experience. “I don’t know if I’ll be here when the game comes out, but I just want to thank all of you for your love and support, and for helping make this possible.”
This heartwarming story echoes similar gestures in the gaming industry, like when Nintendo granted a terminally ill fan early access to Super Mario Bros. Wonder before its release.
The gaming community continues to demonstrate how video games can bring people together and create meaningful moments, even in the face of life’s toughest challenges.
