SearchI’m feeling lucky

askew trickThe page tips a few degrees and never straightens itself.

barrel rollA full rotation instead of a lean.

google gravityThe layout stops holding itself up entirely.

Two and a half degrees is enough to bother you

The sheet is a slab of pressed clay lying on a lilac tray, and it loads crooked. Not dramatically, just enough that your eye keeps trying to correct it, and the spirit level at the top confirms you are not imagining it. That was the whole design of the original trick, a tilt small enough to look like a rendering fault rather than a joke.

The bubble in the level moves with the sheet and changes colour as you go, pale lilac under one degree, mid violet up to twelve, near black plum past that.

Left, right, and further

Each press of askew left or askew right moves the sheet three and a half degrees. They stack, so four presses in one direction puts you at fourteen and the paper starts looking like it is sliding off the desk.

Tilt it further multiplies whatever you already have by 1.6, which escalates quickly. From nine you reach the thirty degree limit in three presses.

Knocking everything crooked

The results underneath get their own random angle and horizontal offset, independent of the sheet. It turns a neat crooked page into something that looks like it was dropped and reassembled badly. Pressing it again lines them back up without touching the main tilt.

The fine adjustment slider

For anyone who wants to sit at exactly 7.5 degrees, or find the precise angle where the layout stops looking accidental and starts looking deliberate. That threshold is somewhere around five degrees for most people.

Askew or tilt, same trick

Both words trigger it, which is why the search traffic splits almost evenly between google tilt and askew google. It has been live longer than most of the tricks on this site, partly because it is so cheap to implement and partly because it never got old.

Related tilts and turns

If a lean is not enough, do a barrel roll rotates the whole thing a full turn, as many times as you can stand. google mirror flips rather than rotates. google gravity is what happens when the tilt goes past the point of no return and the page gives up.

Everything is listed on the google easter eggs page, including goooooooooogle for a different kind of layout abuse.
