In September 2022, the gaming world was stunned when footage and code from the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI leaked online. Nearly two years later, we’re learning more about how this major breach occurred.

The Source of the Leak

YouTuber Morsmutual has revealed that the leak originated from a phishing attack. An employee at Rockstar India, working from home, received a deceptive email containing a malicious link. The employee inadvertently gave the hacker access to their data by clicking this link.

Access to Internal Communications

With this initial access, the attacker could infiltrate Rockstar’s internal Slack channels. These communication platforms contained sensitive information about GTA VI’s development, including the gameplay footage and code that would soon be leaked.

Impact on Development

Despite this setback, Rockstar Games remains committed to its vision for GTA VI. The company still plans to release the game in fall 2025 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.

  • Planned release: Fall 2025
  • Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series

Looking Forward

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of cybersecurity in the gaming industry. As we approach the official release date, anticipation for GTA VI continues to build among gamers worldwide.

The leak may have revealed more than Rockstar intended, but it hasn’t diminished the excitement for the next installment in this iconic open-world series.
