GTA 6 – everything we know so far

If it were possible to truly “break the internet”, the release of the trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 went a very long way in making that almost happen. It was so highly anticipated that one Reddit user left a thread (which has since been deleted) stating that they had taken the day off work for its release.

Unfortunately for them, they needn’t have bothered, as the trailer was just 90 seconds long and was released a day earlier than planned. Nonetheless, it had still racked up over 50 million views inside its first 10 hours, with it having amassed over 179 million views by March 2024.

Despite being relatively short, there was a lot to unpack from the trailer by Rockstar Games, as it provided us with a rather comprehensive overview of what to expect from the next installment of one of the biggest video game series to have ever been developed.

What was revealed during the GTA 6 trailer?

It will be set in Vice City, a fictional city based on a location found in the state of Florida. As a result, there has been speculation about whether we potentially see the use of a casino.

This was an aspect that was absent from the Vice City installment of the game, and a previous leak has suggested that there will be one included this time around.

If we remember, the Diamond Casino & Resort was a key figure of GTA 5, so this might be something that is heavily featured in the upcoming release.

This could be great for those who enjoy playing online slots as a form of entertainment, as they will be able to combine it with their GTA gameplay and perhaps look to try and win some money for their character and build their bank balance as part of a mini-game.

Regarding the main character, we know this version of GTA will be very different from any other. It will be based on a female named Lucia. The game will follow her as she comes out of prison, with a potential Bonnie & Clyde-type story as there is an unnamed male involved, too.

In addition to it being set in Florida, we should expect to see plenty of the Sunshine State’s environment also be included.

This will likely include the swamps and alligators that inhabit the area. It would be impossible not to see a ‘gator during the game or have a big involvement, as the beasts appeared numerous times during the 90-second trailer.

The main takeaway from the trailer was the expected release date. Speculation about the game’s arrival had been rife for years, with the latest release of a title having been in 2021 (Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition).

However, for many, the last time they saw a “main” game to the series was in 2013, when Grand Theft Auto V & Grand Theft Auto Online were first released (with later editions and remastered versions being released subsequently in years to have followed).

GTA VI won’t be available imminently, though, as it has been revealed that it will be released sometime in 2025. There is nothing to suggest when exactly it will be released in terms of a month or an exact date, but Rockstar Games are generally quite good at sticking to the timeframes that they set for their games without too many delays.

There are gameplay aspects that also appear to have been modernized and brought into the current times, with social media looking to play a role. Many will remember the use of pagers and mobiles in previous versions, as you received messages or calls about missions and tasks.

The trailer of GTA 6 suggests social media might be a form of communication, as there were various cutscenes that featured things synonymous with sites, such as interaction buttons.

What gaming platforms will we be able to play GTA 6 on?

At the moment, it would appear that gamers will be rather limited in terms of their options if they want to get their hands on GTA 6.

Rockstar Games has announced that the game will only be released on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. There is no mention of the game being made available to play on a PC, nor whether it will be available to purchase by those who use a PS4 or Xbox One.

If this is the case, it will be a current-gen exclusive, which could force gamers to have to upgrade their gaming equipment if they want to play it.

Speculation has been shared about a PC version, but many are suggesting that it is not worth holding your breath over, as it will take the developer a very long time to create and work on. At the same time, they are more likely to focus on the markets that sell, which will be the current-gen consoles.
